The Metaspeed Sky and Edge are brand new super shoes which have a lot of similarities and few differences. They have similar uppers, midsoles and outsoles but they are designed for different runners.
The Metaspeed Sky is designed for runners who have a stride style which means that when they pick up the pace, they increase their stride length proportionally more than their cadence. The Metaspeed Sky costs $250.
The Metaspeed Edge is designed for runners who have a cadence style which means that when they pick up the pace, their cadence increases proportionally more than their stride length. The Metaspeed Edge also costs $250.
Which one of these super shoes is better for you?
The Metaspeed Sky has a Flytefoam Blast Turbo midsole which is nylon based. It provides enough cushioning for a full marathon while being super light at the same time.
The Metaspeed Edge also uses a Flytefoam Blast Turbo midsole but its midsole is thinner than the midsole of the Sky. It has a firmer ride but it is lighter than the Sky.
The high level of cushioning in the Metaspeed Sky makes it more suited to longer distances like full marathons and further whereas the Metaspeed Edge is better suited to shorter distances like half marathons, 10 K and 5 K races.
The carbon plate in the Metaspeed Sky is steeper and more prominent than the carbon plate in the Metaspeed Edge. The Sky’s plate has more aerial propulsion so it offers more assistance in helping you pick up the pace.
The Metaspeed Edge’s more conservative carbon plate makes the Edge easier to control and makes it ride more like a traditional racing shoe than a super shoe.
The Metaspeed Sky has a 5 mm drop compared to an 8 mm drop in the Metaspeed Edge. This makes the Edge more suited to heel strikers because it offers more foam in the heel to soften foot strikes. The Edge is also easier on the calves and achilles than the Sky with its 5 mm drop.
Both shoes use ASICS’ soft, flexible rubber ASICSGRIP on their outsoles. This rubber has great traction on a variety of surfaces, both wet and dry. The two shoes have the exact same rubber placement on their outsoles.
Outsole durability is low for both shoes because there is a lot of exposed midsole foam which is very soft and delicate. Both should be used exclusively for racing.
The Metaspeed Edge is more stable than the Metaspeed Sky because your foot sits lower to the ground in the Edge and it is also firmer so there is less lean bias.
The Metaspeed Sky has a higher toe-spring than the Metaspeed Edge so it has more of a rocker geometry. This rocker helps the Sky feel more efficient and energy-saving over long distances than the Edge.
The uppers of both shoes are made of the same thin, breathable mesh. They both have lightly padded collars with excellent foot lockdown. Their tongues are flat and not gusseted so they slide downwards during runs.
The big difference is that the Metaspeed Sky has a wider, more roomy toe box. The Metaspeed Edge has a snugger, more racing fit upper. The Metaspeed Sky is true to size while the Metaspeed Edge runs a half size small.
If you’re looking for a long-distance racer with more cushioning, the Metaspeed Sky is the shoe for you. The Sky has a more aggressive carbon plate which assists you more to increase your stride length. It also has a higher toe-spring which feels more efficient over long distances.
If you want a racer for shorter distances that feels more agile, the Metaspeed Edge is better for you. The Edge has a less prominent plate that allows you to control the shoe more to increase your cadence. The Edge is lighter than the Sky and also more stable. It also feels more like a traditional racing shoe with good ground feel than a super shoe.
